Swipe left or right

Increasing popularity in online dating apps like Tinder has made the once embarrassing form of meeting a partner into a socially accepted norm.

Tinder has become the most used dating app worldwide with at least 10 million active users a day. It was initially introduced as a dating app for young adults to find love or new friendships and connect with people but has also been called the hook-up or sex-app.

The dating app app Tinder allows people to ‘match’ with each other using the swiping system. The Swiping system is either swipe right if the person is interested in the other or swipe left is the person isn’t interested.

Orlando Aleman, 25 has been an active user on Tinder in hopes of establishing a good long-term relationship with a partner.

“I have been using Tinder for about one year,” said Aleman.

Since Aleman has been single for awhile he decided to sign up for Tinder because he was after sexual pleasures at first.

“I wasn’t expecting anything out of Tinder, I wanted to sign up for the app to start connecting with people and explore my options,” said Aleman.

When it comes to talking to a girl in public Aleman gets very nervous and shy to approach a girl he finds attractive due to all the social constraints involved.

“I feel a lot more comfortable communicating on Tinder than I do in person. Im extremely shy and its hard for me to tell whether the other person is also interested in me so having the app that establishes that two people are interested makes it a lot easier for me to be able to connect with that person,” said Aleman.

The exploratory factor analysis has shown that 23 percent of the current and former Tinder users access the app on a daily basis. Around 20 percent indicated that they used the app less than once a month or twice.

“I use Tinder almost everyday now especially when I go out. It is great way to kill time while you are waiting for someone and I actually get entertained using it because of the new potential matches in every new area,” said Aleman.

Self-worth has been proven to be a big factor in young adults using Tinder because it helps them validate the sexual attractiveness of their appearances and feeling better about themselves by getting “matches” notifications from girls or boys.

Stephanie Fernandez, 24 feels the reason why she doesn’t connect with anyone in public is because of her looks.

“By getting ‘matches’ through Tinder it actually makes me feel confident in myself and my appearance because I see that many guys are interested in connecting with me,’ said Fernandez.

Fernandez started using Tinder because it was recommended to her by her best friend and it was the trendiest dating app going around at the time.

“I started using it because I was curious to know more about this new trend that’s become a main motivation for everyone to start using,” said Fernandez.

Fernandez didn’t expect anything out of Tinder when she signed up for it.

“I was trying to find something that least resembled a relationship because I recently got out of a relationship. I wanted to have fun and explore and meet new people but I wasn’t closed off to the idea of having a relationship if it felt right with the guy,” said Fernandez.
